The short version: Wanderlore has no accounts and no logins. We don't sell your data or use it for advertising. Your precise location isn't stored — it's used in the moment to find what's around you. We do keep a non-identifying log of the stories people explore to improve the app. Google Analytics doesn't load at all unless you accept — decline and nothing is sent to Google.
Who we are
Wanderlore (“we”, “us”) runs the website at wanderlore.uk. For UK data-protection purposes we are the data controller. Questions? Get in touch.
What we collect, and why
- Your location — only when you tap “Use my location” or type a place. We send those coordinates (or the place name) to our server to find nearby points of interest and to write the story. Your precise coordinates are used in the moment and not stored — see the usage log below for the non-identifying context we do keep.
- Searches you type — the place names you look up, used to find and describe that place (and recorded in the usage log below).
- Usage log — to understand what people explore, improve Wanderlore, and build better content, we keep a record of the stories we serve together with non-identifying context: the place, the area or town, a country-level location, the website that referred you (if any), and any place name you searched. This log holds no IP address, no precise coordinates, and nothing that identifies you personally.
- If you contact us — when you send a message through our contact form, we receive your email address and message so we can reply. That's handled by Formspree (below), and we keep it only as long as needed to deal with your enquiry.
- Technical data — your IP address and basic device/browser information are processed transiently to serve the site and to prevent abuse (rate-limiting). We don't keep these in a long-term log.
- Analytics — only if you accept, we use Google Analytics to understand things like which places people explore, page views, rough location (country/city level) and device type. This helps us improve Wanderlore. Google Analytics is not loaded and nothing is sent to Google unless you tap “Accept” — if you decline, it never runs.
Cookies
We use as few as possible:
- Your consent choice is saved in your browser's local storage so we don't ask every visit. This isn't shared with anyone.
- Google Analytics cookies are set only after you tap “Accept” on the cookie banner — and until then Google Analytics isn't even loaded, so no request is made to Google at all. If you choose “No thanks”, none are set and it never runs. You can change your mind any time by clearing this site's data in your browser.
Services we rely on
Delivering a story means your request briefly touches a few trusted services:
- Anthropic (Claude) — writes the story from the place and the surrounding details we gather. Anthropic does not use API inputs to train its models.
- Wikipedia / Wikimedia — the source of the facts and photos.
- OpenStreetMap (Nominatim) — turns coordinates into a place name.
- Supabase — stores our usage log (the story text and the non-identifying context described above).
- Formspree — delivers messages you send through the contact form.
- Google Analytics — usage analytics, only with your consent.
- Vercel — hosts the site.
What we don't do
- No accounts, no passwords, no profiles.
- No selling or sharing of personal data, ever.
- No advertising trackers.
- No storing of your precise location history.
Your rights
Under UK GDPR you have rights to access, correct or erase personal data we hold about you, and to object to processing. Because Wanderlore keeps no account and our usage log isn't tied to your identity, there's usually nothing personal to retrieve or delete — the main exception is a message you've sent us through the contact form. If you'd like us to delete that, or have any other concern, get in touch and we'll help. You may also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
Wanderlore isn't directed at children under 13 and we don't knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we change how we handle data, we'll update this page and the “last updated” date above.
